Simmons returns to NBA as Kings move quickly after standout workouts

Ben Simmons is back in the NBA, restarting his career with the Sacramento Kings after signing a one‑year minimum contract. The former first overall pick spent the entire 2025/26 season away from the league, focusing on full physical recovery following years of back issues. According to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, Simmons impressed during a minicamp with Australia’s national team, prompting Kings general manager Scott Perry to travel to Miami for a private workout.

Simmons later trained again in front of Sacramento’s staff, and coach Doug Christie was reportedly convinced almost immediately, saying, “Let’s take him,” after only a few minutes. The Australian is described as thrilled and motivated by the opportunity. Encouraging signs also come from David Patrick, Simmons’s mentor and assistant coach with Australia, who believes the 30‑year‑old has regained both athleticism and confidence. Initially set to back up rookie Darius Acuff Jr., Simmons could earn a larger role if his resurgence continues.
