CWI cuts player fees amid major structural shake‑up

Cricket West Indies has unveiled sweeping reforms to confront what it calls a financial and competitive crisis, beginning with a 25% reduction in international retainer fees and the suspension of both the men’s Super50 and women’s T20 Blaze. International players will still receive 12‑month contracts, while domestic retainers shift to seven months. CEO Chris Dehring said the cuts are necessary for long‑term stability, acknowledging players’ cooperation despite the difficult circumstances.

The suspension of key domestic tournaments removes an important pathway to the men’s ODI side, which must contest a World Cup qualifier in early 2027. CWI argues that the historic model—covering all travel, salaries and staging costs for every team—has become unsustainable, with over $80 million spent on domestic air travel alone in 15 years.

Focus now turns to preparing the ODI squad, while new invitational events will determine qualification for the 2028 Olympics. Further restructuring will reshape the women’s calendar, though the West Indies Championship will continue in its current format.
