Ireland's one-off test against England had a challenging first day

After Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum took over the red-ball squad last summer, the aggressive "Bazball" style that has swept the nation by storm was born. Broad scored fifty runs while playing in that manner. Only 20 runs separated England and Ireland at the end of the first day of this one-off Test. Stuart Broad's first five-wicket haul at Lord's in ten years saw Ireland bowled for 172 at the start of the evening session.

Before Paul Stirling played fire with fire in an exciting knock of 30, Broad decimated Ireland's top order throughout the opening hour, taking three wickets to drop the visitors to 19 for three. James McCollum, the opening batsman for Ireland, gave him assistance with 36, while all-rounder Curtis Campher added 33. However, Broad would not let his opportunity to join the Lord's honours board slip away, and he finished with five for 51 from 17 overs with the help of Jack Leach and Matthew Potts.
