Sawyer exits as White Ferns coach after four‑year tenure

Ben Sawyer has left his role as New Zealand Women’s head coach after New Zealand Cricket chose not to renew his contract, concluding a four‑year spell marked by major structural changes and on‑field success. Although his deal ran until December 2026, NZC said a high‑performance review prompted the creation of a new Performance Lead role and the removal of the team manager position, leading to Sawyer’s departure. An interim coach and manager will guide the side during next month’s T20I series in Australia, with recruitment for permanent replacements beginning soon.

Sawyer, appointed in June 2022, oversaw a period of notable progress, including a bronze medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and New Zealand’s historic 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup win. Several young players developed into champions under his leadership. Sawyer called the job an honour, while NZC and captain Amelia Kerr praised his professionalism, preparation and belief, crediting him for shaping a defining era.
