In order to maintain its lead over its championship competitors, Arsenal easily defeated Newcastle 4-1 on Saturday night, extending its winning run in the Premier League to six games. After a dull 1-0 loss to Porto in the Champions League midweek, Arsenal swiftly found its attacking threat again as the hosts completely dominated a Newcastle side that suddenly appeared to be a shell of the squad that finished fourth the previous season.
With six league games played in 2024, the Gunners have already scored 25 goals, and 15 in their past three. However, in order to open the score from a corner in the eighteenth minute, Newcastle defender Sven Botman had to assist them. Making his first Premier League appearance since 2018, Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius reacted well to stop Gabriel Magalhaes' header, but Botman mishandled his effort at a clearance and ended up sprawled on the ground, putting the ball across the line with his knee.
