Benfica defeats Club Brugge 2-0 in the Champions League match

Benfica also advanced closer to the quarterfinals of the Champions League after defeating Club Brugge 2-0 in the first leg of their last-16 match in Belgium.
The second half at the Jan Breydelstadion, saw all the action with both goals coming to break the deadlock. Substitute David Neres, took advantage of shoddy defence late in the game to put distance between the teams. Six minutes after halftime, Joao Mario had started the scoring from the penalty spot.

When the teams meet in Lisbon for the second leg on March 7, it will be expected that the Portuguese league leaders, who fell to Liverpool in the last eight last season, will finish the job. After the win, Benfica coach Roger Schmidt also looked optimistic and commented, ”When you play the first leg away from home in a Champions League tie and win it is always a good first step. We are halfway there.”
