Empoli held Genoa to a 1-1 draw

Mateo Retegui and Junior Messias' return was good news for the Grifone, but Albert Gudmundsson, Mattia Bani, and Kevin Strootman were sidelined. After a thrilling 4-3 loss to Sassuolo, the visitors were without Tommaso Baldanzi, Giuseppe Pezzella, and Gabriele Guarino. In the first minute, Stefano Sabelli missed a reasonably unguarded volley beyond of the back post, and shortly after, Nicolò Cambiaghi ballooned over on the chest and half-volley.

After swerving past two, Daniel Maldini missed a shot, and then Retegui misdirected a 12-yard cross from Junior Messias with a diving header. Messias went for goal himself at the half-hour mark, sending a volley into the ground that banged the crossbar. Ruslan Malinovskyi gave Genoa the lead when he touched off a ball from Milan Badelj outside the area and sent a signature left-foot daisy-cutter into the far bottom corner.
