Genoa beat Lazio 1-0

After a shocking 2-1 loss away to Lecce, Maurizio Sarri was already under fire, while Pedro and Marcos Antonio were injured. The Grifone started their season with a 4-1 loss against Fiorentina, although Ruslan Malinovskyi made his debut as Stefano Sabelli and Kevin Strootman returned from suspensions. Alessandro Vogliacco, Marko Pajac, and Junior Messias all sustained injuries.

In the opening minutes, Retegui headed an Albert Gudmundsson cross straight at Ivan Provedel. Genoa then rattled the goal with a misdirected Johan Vasquez cross that transformed into a strike to catch the custodian off guard. Following a frantic move, Genoa scored to take the lead. Frendrup's chest shot and volley were parried into Retegui's path for the header and his first Serie A goal. A Rade Dragusin bump led to Ciro Immobile's penalty appeals being rejected since the referee was in an excellent position and allowed play to continue.
