Girona held Real Sociedad to a 2-2 draw

Girona held Real Sociedad to a 2-2 draw on Saturday in La Liga, giving Villarreal a sliver of hope that they can finish in the top four. Fourth-placed Imanol Alguacil's team seized a comfortable two-goal lead thanks to a penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal and seasoned playmaker David Silva. The 37-year-old former Manchester City midfielder earlier this week extended his contract with Real Sociedad through June 2024. Yan Couto and Cristhian Stuani scored for the Catalan visitors before halftime, allowing them to tie the score.

Oriol Romeu of Girona was sent for a second booking in the dying moments, but La Real was unable to take advantage and score a dramatic winner. After their tie, Real Sociedad now has an eight-point lead over fifth-place Villarreal, who will play Athletic Bilbao later on Saturday. The second-place team, Real Madrid, will host Getafe before playing Manchester City in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal.
