Under new coach Davide Nicola, Empoli managed to pull off a 3-2 victory against Sassuolo thanks to a goal from substitute Simone Bastoni deep into stoppage time. After being put on with ten minutes remaining, Bastoni scored a rare goal with his header in the fourth minute of extra time. Empoli has won three of their last six games to climb to 13th position and move five points out of the relegation zone. Conversely, Sassuolo is in freefall. They are tied for 18th position with Hellas Verona after losing five of their last six games.
Earlier, in the eleventh minute, Sebastiano Luperto headed home a free kick from Razvan Marin to give Empoli the lead. Andrea Pinamonti later leveled the score by converting a penalty flawlessly. Afterwards, the game saw one more goal from each side from M'Baye Niang and Sassuolo captain Gian Marco Ferrari but Bastoni stole the limelight with a stoppage-time winner.
