Luca Zidane heroics as Algeria stun the Netherlands

Algeria claimed an impressive 1‑0 win over the Netherlands in Rotterdam, surviving sustained pressure thanks to a superb performance from goalkeeper Luca Zidane. Playing at Feyenoord’s De Kuip, the visitors resisted repeated Dutch attacks, with Zidane denying Tijjani Reijnders and Cody Gakpo in quick succession. Wearing a protective mask after a fractured jaw, the 28‑year‑old showed remarkable composure, winning further duels against Reijnders and Gakpo before the break. The second half, shaped by numerous substitutions, became more balanced, though Donyell Malen and Memphis Depay continued to threaten.

Zidane produced athletic saves from Justin Kluivert and Depay to keep Algeria level. The decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute, when Anis Hadj Moussa scored from Algeria’s second shot on target. The result boosts Algeria ahead of a daunting World Cup group featuring Argentina, Austria and Jordan. The Netherlands, favourites in Group F, must sharpen their finishing despite strong recent performances against elite opposition.
