Manchester City beat Everton 3-1

After trailing to a first-half goal by former winger Jack Harrison, the freshly crowned Club World Cup winners rallied to score twice more in the second half, thanks to goals from Phil Foden and a penalty kick from Julian Alvarez.

Late in the game, Everton was one point above the relegation zone when Bernardo Silva curled home into an empty net after the otherwise outstanding Jordan Pickford had his kick charged down. Even though it was just City's second victory in seven league games, it was sufficient to put Liverpool and second-place Arsenal within striking distance. Less welcome, though, were the injuries that sidelined John Stones, who was just making his fifth Premier League start of the season, and the fact that this was the eighth straight Premier League game without a clean sheet.
