Nice's early-season optimism becomes less and less likely with each passing game as their winless run of six French league games was prolonged with a 2-1 home loss to bottom-of-the-table Montpellier. The south coast team has lost ground recently, even though they led Ligue 1 early in the season. They have dropped to fifth position in the standings since their last league victory on January 27.
Although they had more control and attempts on goal than Montpellier, Nice never came close to replicating their 4-1 French Cup triumph over the team a month earlier, which put an end to their dismal league performance. After nine minutes, a corner kick struck Jean-Clair Todibo, who netted into his own goal, giving Montpellier the lead. Jeremie Boga’s header for the home team two minutes later leveled the score. However, three minutes prior to halftime, Teji Savanier scored the game-winning penalty kick.
