The draw for this season places Eddie Howe's team at the top of what is thought to be the hardest Champions League group. Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan both earned their first points in a scoreless tie in Germany, giving Newcastle four points from their first two games, one more than Paris Saint-Germain. The first-ever matchup between the teams pitched Saudi Arabia's and Qatar's competing athletic agendas against one another.

Newcastle's fortunes have changed as a result of a Saudi buyout two years ago, just like PSG's rise to prominence as the dominating power in French football during the previous ten years was financed by money from the Middle East.
