Premier League promotion will shake-up

Starting the coming season, the English Championship will significantly overhaul its promotion playoffs, expanding the field from four clubs to six competitors. While the top two finishers still secure automatic Premier League elevation, the postseason dynamic changes radically. Now, the third and fourth-placed sides advance directly to the semi-finals, awaiting winners from a new quarter-final round involving the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth-placed teams.

The semi-finals retain their two-legged home-and-away format, leading to the decisive final at Wembley Stadium, widely recognized as football’s most lucrative fixture due to the immense financial rewards involved. The English Football League stated this decision is designed to generate more competitive fixtures during the season's crucial phase, giving extra teams a dream chance at ascending to the prestigious top flight. Consequently, this bold initiative officially terminates the traditional four-team playoff system employed since the 1986-1987 season, signaling a historic and major transformation for the division.
