Rayo Vallecano holds back Real Sociedad to 2-2 draw

Real Sociedad traveled to Madrid hoping to cut the gap on their Champions League opponents, but things did not go as planned for the Basque side after the final whistle. At one end, Brais Mendez smacked a free kick against the crossbar before Abdul Mumin pounced on a sloppy clearing to put Rayo ahead. Captain Mikel Oyarzabal volleyed them level before the interval, and the visitors' No.10 calmly rolled home a penalty after the restart.

Rayo had one more sting in the tail, however, as replacement Bebe slammed home an equalizer in extra time. The fortunes of the other Basque team in play in Sunday's early games were opposite, as Athletic Club seized their opportunity for a home tie against Valencia. Late goals were featured in other matches as well and Real Betis won their first league victory in three attempts.
