Salzburg capitalizes on Benfica's errors in a 2-0 victory

Salzburg missed an early penalty but was awarded another shortly after for a foolish handball, putting the team on pace for a surprising 2-0 win as Benfica played more than 75 minutes with only 10 men. Just over a minute into the game, Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin dived into Salzburg's Strahinja Pavlović while attempting to intercept a corner. Karim Konaté sent the free kick well beyond the bar. When João Mário struck the post in the 12th minute, Portuguese champion Benfica led by coach Roger Schmidt appeared to be taking control of the game, but almost immediately handed away another penalty.

As António Silva sought to clear, a deflected shot soared high into the air and crashed off the crossbar into his outstretched arm. He was dismissed and Roko Šimić made no mistake this time and scored as Trubin dove the wrong way. Later Salzburg hit another goal in the 51st minute to get all three points.
