Friday's loss prevented Sassuolo from picking up their first road victory since mid-March, meaning they can't participate in a UEFA competition next season. Manolo Gabbiadini gave Samp the lead early in the game, but Domenico Berardi drew even a minute later. Sassuolo took the lead two minutes later on a header from Matheus Henrique. After Fabio Quagliarella, playing in his farewell home game for Samp, struck the post from a corner in the 78th minute, Sassuolo appeared to be winning until defender Martin Erlic scored an own goal.
Samp will finish last in the league this season, while Sassuolu's best position is 12th if they win their final game against Fiorentina. However, they still need Udinese, who are a point ahead of them but have the upper hand in the game, to lose ground.
