By eliminating Newcastle United, the third-placed in the Premier League, Sheffield Wednesday gave the fans a spectacular surprise. Thanks to a brace from Josh Windass, Wednesday defeated high-flying Newcastle 2-1 at Hillsborough, moving on to the FA Cup fourth round.
With no VAR in use, Windass handed the host team the edge in the 52nd minute with a close-range goal, despite the fact that the forward appeared to be offside. Then, in the 65th minute, Windass calmly scored another after breaking through to double Wednesday's advantage. With more than 20 minutes remaining, substitute Bruno Guimarães' close-range strike gave Newcastle some optimism, but they were unable to force an equalizer.
The Magpies lost in the third round of the competition for the third straight year, but the Owls now hold on to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games across all competitions.
