Spain squad drops Real Madrid's Huijsen due to muscle issues

Dean Huijsen was released from the Spain camp on Sunday evening, shortly after the squad arrived in Seville.

"The defender has been stood down from the final European qualifier against Turkey after reporting muscle discomfort that also kept him out of the Georgia match. His club has been kept informed throughout," the RFEF confirmed.

"Prioritising the player's health and wellbeing, the Spanish Football Federation has opted to release him," the statement added.

His withdrawal represents another setback for Luis de la Fuente, who has had to contend with a lengthy injury list and is currently without more than half of the side that started at the last European Championship.

Spain, however, remain on the brink of direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup. La Roja can even afford a six-goal defeat to Turkey today and still finish top of the group.
