Tanzania captain Mbwana Samatta hangs up international boots

Mbwana Samatta has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to a close more than ten years as captain of Tanzania’s national team. In a heartfelt message on social media, the 33‑year‑old expressed pride in representing Taifa Stars around the world and thanked supporters, the government and the Tanzania Football Federation for their backing. Samatta said the time had come for new talents to lead the team forward, adding that he reached his decision after deep reflection.

He emphasised that while his playing chapter is over, his commitment to Tanzanian football remains, promising to contribute through other avenues and to support the team from the stands. During his tenure, Samatta guided Tanzania to three Africa Cup of Nations appearances and a historic run to the Round of 16. His club career included standout success with TP Mazembe, a prolific spell at Genk, and a landmark move to Aston Villa, where he became Tanzania’s first Premier League goalscorer.
