Thomas Tuchel remains steadfast in his belief that England’s cautious approach against Argentina was justified, even as he accepted full responsibility for the dramatic semi‑final defeat. England led until the closing minutes, only for Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez to strike in the eighty‑fifth and ninety‑second minutes, completing Argentina’s comeback. Tuchel argued that his side had delivered one of their finest displays under intense pressure, insisting the players were “ten out of ten” despite falling short.
He acknowledged England became too passive after scoring, losing control of possession and allowing Argentina to bombard the box with crosses and shots. Defensive substitutions, he said, were intended to stabilise the team as the lines grew stretched. Tuchel conceded that such decisions are easily criticised when results turn negative.
He praised his squad’s resilience throughout the tournament, highlighting their physical effort, demanding travel, and performances in challenging conditions.
