Stewart's contract with the Pistons was originally reported by ESPN. Last season, Stewart had a career-high 11.3 point and 8.1 rebound average. Over the course of his three-year career, he had averaged nine points and 7.8 rebounds, and he was about to enter the final year of his rookie deal. The former Washington standout was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the No. 16 overall choice in 2020, and in the following week, he was dealt to Houston and Detroit.
The 6-foot-8 Stewart gives the Pistons a much-needed muscular presence. The recovery from shin surgery of Cade Cunningham, along with those of second-year professionals Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, and rookie wing Ausar Thompson, is crucial to Detroit's ambitions of rebuilding. Last season, the Pistons won a league-low 17 games, and Dwane Casey, who had one year left on his contract as coach, resigned to join the front office.
