Kings to delay Sabonis extension talks

Sacramento Kings have decided not to pursue a contract extension with Domantas Sabonis this summer, despite the Lithuanian center becoming eligible in July. The choice aligns with the franchise’s broader plan to reassess its direction after a difficult 22‑60 season. According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, general manager Scott Perry has maintained steady communication with Sabonis but intends for him to play the entire 2026‑27 campaign under his current deal, which carries two years and $94 million. Sacramento spent the past year exploring multiple trade scenarios, including near‑finalized talks with Toronto involving RJ Barrett and discussions with Detroit centered on Jalen Duren. Conversations with Charlotte and Boston also failed to progress.

Despite the uncertainty, Sabonis has shown commitment, welcoming rookie Darius Acuff Jr. and attending Summer League alongside team executives. After an injury‑marred season of just 19 games, both sides now enter 2026‑27 focused on rebuilding value and postponing long‑term decisions.
