Sacramento Kings point guard Russell Westbrook has officially surpassed the Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, claiming seventh place on the NBA all-time assists list. Westbrook is one of only eight players in league history with over 10,000 total career assists. At age 37, he is currently playing his eighteenth professional season, his first with Sacramento. A nine-time All-Star and two-time scoring champion, he has led the league in assists three separate times.
Selected to the prestigious NBA 75th Anniversary Team, Westbrook famously averaged a triple-double in four separate seasons. Entering Friday’s home game against the visiting Dallas Mavericks, he was averaging 14.4 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.9 rebounds per game. It is possible Westbrook could crack the elite top five in total assists before the season finally concludes. The legends currently remaining ahead of him include John Stockton, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd, LeBron James, Steve Nash, and Mark Jackson.
