Flintoff steps down as England Lions coach ahead of Thunder move

Andrew Flintoff has resigned as England Lions head coach, ending a tenure that began in September 2024 and focused on developing the country’s next wave of players and coaches. The former England all‑rounder said he took great pride in guiding the nation’s top young talent and thanked staff members, particularly Ed Barney and Rob Key, for their support and trust. Flintoff’s departure comes two months after Sydney Thunder appointed him head coach for the upcoming Big Bash League season, marking his first full‑time role in Australian domestic cricket.

Barney, the ECB Men’s Performance Director, credited Flintoff with transforming the Lions environment into a programme that consistently pushed excellence and helped both players and coaches flourish. The ECB confirmed that Mike Yardy will lead the Lions in their four‑day match against a Professional County Club Select XI and Pakistan Men beginning August 12 in Beckenham, as the team transitions into its next phase.
