The regulatory landscape for Formula 1’s 2026–2028 cycle remains unsettled, with the FIA and teams navigating what many insiders describe as significant confusion. Despite the May announcement of an agreement to shift to a 60:40 thermal‑electric split from 2027, resistance from several manufacturers and teams has complicated the path forward. Concerns range from the ADUO concept and the need to redesign power units, to rising costs and the expectation that current chassis and fuel tanks could be carried over from 2026.
According to Auto Motor und Sport, the FIA is now considering a compromise: a moderate fuel‑flow increase and a slight reduction in race distance for 2027, followed by the full 60:40 transition in 2028. The proposed lap reduction has caused alarm, but the adjustment would be minimal. Teams have suggested shortening selected Grands Prix by only one or two laps and limiting formation laps to one, a proposal that currently faces little opposition.
