Auckland make history with first A‑League crown

Auckland FC became the first New Zealand side to win the A‑League grand final after edging Sydney FC 1‑0 before a sold‑out Go Media Stadium. Cameron Howieson delivered the decisive moment on the hour mark, smashing home from outside the box after a chaotic scramble, sending the home crowd into delirium. The victory crowns a remarkable rise for the league’s newest club, only in their second season and guided by former Sydney legend Steve Corica, who previously coached the Sky Blues to titles in 2019 and 2020.

Auckland had dominated much of the first half, with Sam Cosgrove denied a penalty and Lachlan Brook firing narrowly wide. Sydney improved after the break, forcing Auckland into a flurry of yellow cards, but the hosts regained control before Howieson struck. Jesse Randall missed a late chance to double the lead, yet Auckland held firm as Sydney pushed desperately for an equaliser, extending their winless run against the champions.
