Budimir strike keeps Croatia alive

Croatia revived their World Cup campaign with a narrow 1–0 victory over Panama, a result that ended the Central Americans’ hopes of reaching the last 32. After a chaotic opening defeat to England, Zlatko Dalic’s side needed a response and found it through Ante Budimir, who tapped in Josip Stanisic’s low cross early in the second half before a jubilant Croatian‑leaning crowd of 43,000 in Toronto.

Panama, however, pushed Croatia to their limits. José Luis Rodríguez forced Dominik Livakovic into a fingertip save that diverted his header onto the bar, while late pressure failed to produce an equaliser, extending Panama’s goalless World Cup run. Coach Thomas Christiansen praised his players’ progress despite elimination.

The night also marked Luka Modric’s 200th international appearance. The 40‑year‑old received a roaring ovation when substituted and was lifted by teammates after full‑time, with Dalic calling him a humble, natural leader. Croatia now face Ghana for a place in the knockout stage.
