Courtois granted rest from Nations League duty

Thibaut Courtois has been given approval to sit out Belgium’s Nations League campaign, though he has not stepped away from international football, according to Belgian media. The 34‑year‑old had hinted after the World Cup that he might pause his national‑team involvement or seek a lighter schedule this season, especially with Belgium set to face France, Italy and Turkey in six demanding matches across three months.

Speaking after Real Madrid’s 2-1 Champions League win over Inter Milan, Courtois said new Belgium coach Mark van Bommel understands his decision. He stressed he will remain available for the Euro 2028 qualifying campaign and accepts he must compete for his place like any other goalkeeper. Courtois also admitted he is unsure whether he can maintain such an intense rhythm for another four years.

Belgium’s first European Championship qualifiers are scheduled for March next year, giving Courtois time to manage his workload responsibly.
