Twente shut down Barça’s bid for rising defender Ruud Nijstad

Twente have blocked Barcelona’s attempt to sign promising defender Ruud Nijstad, after the Dutch club received an €8 million offer for the 19‑year‑old. Technical director Erik ten Hag confirmed that several major European teams have shown interest in the centre‑back, but stressed that Nijstad intends to remain in Enschede this season. The youngster renewed his contract in June, committing to the club until 2029, a move that strengthened Twente’s position and signalled his desire to continue developing locally.

Barcelona had hoped to secure the defender as part of their long‑term planning, but will now have to wait for another opportunity to reopen negotiations. Nijstad is focused on earning a place in the first team and contributing to Twente’s campaign, with the club viewing him as a key asset for the future. For now, the Catalan side must look elsewhere, while keeping the door open should circumstances change later in the season.
