UEFA Hits Guendouzi and Greenwood with heavy sanctions

UEFA has issued severe punishments after the violent scenes that erupted following Lyon–Fenerbahçe in the Champions League playoff. Matteo Guendouzi received the toughest sanction: a €50,000 fine and a four‑match suspension, with two games held in abeyance for a one‑year probation period. The midfielder will miss the upcoming derby against Roma. Mason Greenwood was fined €30,000 and given a one‑match ban, also suspended conditionally.

Lyon goalkeeper Antonio Ferreira faces a three‑match suspension plus two additional games on probation, with UEFA citing aggravated aggression. The penalties stem from the mass brawl triggered by provocations toward home supporters, intensified by the historic rivalry between Lyon and Marseille, where both Guendouzi and Greenwood previously played.

UEFA also fined the clubs involved: Fenerbahçe must pay €95,000, while Lyon faces a €180,500 charge. The ruling signals UEFA’s determination to clamp down on misconduct after one of the playoff’s most heated confrontations.
