Benzema’s Lyon homecoming blocked by Saudi Ambassador contract

Karim Benzema came close to completing a remarkable return to Olympique Lyonnais this summer, with the club exploring a one‑year deal and the striker even willing to play without wages. However, the reunion collapsed due to his ongoing role as an ambassador for the Saudi Pro League, a commitment that runs until 2030 and legally prevents him from competing in any other country.

According to L’Équipe, Lyon held concrete discussions after Benzema mutually terminated his contract with Al‑Hilal, leaving him technically a free agent but still bound by his wider promotional obligations. The veteran forward was eager for a sentimental homecoming at the club where his career began, yet the ambassador agreement proved an insurmountable obstacle.

Despite his desire to return to Ligue 1, Benzema had no way to override the terms of his Saudi deal, ending Lyon’s hopes of a fairytale signing before negotiations could advance further.
