A-League season in turmoil as referees go on strike

The A‑League has been plunged into chaos after the Professional Football Referees Association declared a strike, refusing to officiate any upcoming men’s or women’s matches. The dispute, reported by Vince Rugari, centres on a proposed employment model that would split referees’ contracts between Football Australia and the Australian Professional Leagues. The PFRA argues that being contracted by the APL—an organisation owned by A‑League clubs—creates an unacceptable conflict of interest and undermines referee integrity.

Talks collapsed on Friday, prompting the stoppage. PFRA president Evgeny Vizelman said officials lack basic employment certainty, with some unpaid for completed work. Australia Cup semi‑finals and the Australian Championship will proceed, potentially with overseas referees hired per match if the dispute continues.

The crisis adds to mounting instability, as the APL is also locked in a stalled pay negotiation with players after the collective bargaining agreement expired on June 30, leaving the season’s start under a cloud.
