Algeria and Austria produced one of the World Cup’s most dramatic group finales, drawing 3–3 in Kansas City to secure qualification for both teams while eliminating Iran. Marko Arnautović opened the scoring with a composed finish, but Algeria equalised before the break when Rafik Belghali capitalised on a fortunate ricochet off the corner flag and slalomed through to score.
Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead with a superb strike early in the second half, only for Riyad Mahrez to level again moments later after excellent work from Houssem Aouar. With a draw suiting both sides, the match seemed to be drifting toward a quiet conclusion until a frantic stoppage‑time twist. Mahrez struck in the 93rd minute, sparking Algerian celebrations, but substitute Sasa Kalajdzic headed home at the death to rescue Austria.
Both nations finish on four points behind Argentina. Algeria now face Switzerland, while Austria meet European champions Spain.
