Van Bommel says he never considered Netherlands job

Belgium coach Mark van Bommel insists he had no hesitation accepting the national team job, dismissing any notion he might have waited for an offer from his native Netherlands. Speaking at his first press conference since being appointed last month, the 49‑year‑old said he immediately embraced the chance to replace Rudi Garcia. Van Bommel described leading a national team as one of the sport’s top roles, stressing the honour of coaching Belgium after turning down several offers in recent years.

Belgium reached the World Cup quarter‑finals, but Garcia’s contract was not renewed, opening the door for the former Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AC Milan defender. Van Bommel emphasised that winning remains his priority, while avoiding bold predictions ahead of the European Championship. His debut arrives on September 25 against Italy in the Nations League. He also plans to speak with Thibaut Courtois, who requested a break from international duty after the World Cup.
