After a long time, a new team is heading to Worlds from the VCS

For the first time since 2019, Vietnam will be represented at an international League of Legends competition by a group other than GAM Esports or Saigon Buffalo. By defeating Team Secret in the VCS lower bracket final today, Team Whales earned a spot in the 2023 League World Championship.  Since 2019, only GAM Esports (formerly Gigabyte Marines) and Saigon Buffalo (previously Phong Vu Buffalo) have represented Vietnam at international League competitions. Every Mid-Season Invitational and World Championship competition that has taken place over the course of those four seasons has included one (or both) of those teams.

Vietnam did not send any teams to any international League of Legends competitions in 2020 or 2021 since it was the final nation to overcome COVID-19 travel-related difficulties.  But this year, Team Whales will be the first group to represent the VCS on the world stage that isn't GAM Esports or Saigon Buffalo.
