CAF considering 2027 AFCON venue change amid major delays

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations could undergo a dramatic shift, with CAF now seriously evaluating alternative hosts due to significant delays in preparations across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The tournament, scheduled from 19 June to 17 July next summer, was meant to mark a historic first co‑hosting between the three East African nations. Instead, the project has entered a race against time. Despite repeated assurances from local authorities, CAF’s concerns have intensified as stadium and infrastructure work remains far behind schedule.

President Patrice Motsepe publicly expressed confidence during his recent inspection tour, insisting there was “no plan B or C,” yet behind the scenes the situation appears far more tense. A decisive inspection is set for January, likely determining whether the event stays put or moves. Potential alternatives include Egypt, Morocco and Ivory Coast — all equipped with ready‑to‑use facilities — or a calendar swap that would allow Egypt to host in 2027 and give the current trio an extra year to complete essential works.
