Gilardino returns to Parma as new head coach

Parma have appointed Alberto Gilardino as their new manager, confirming the Italian’s return to the club where he once thrived as a prolific striker. Gilardino replaces Carlos Cuesta, who left after he and the board agreed that conditions were no longer suitable to continue last season’s sporting project. Parma announced that the new head coach has signed a contract running until the end of the 2026‑27 campaign, with an option for two additional seasons.

A hero of Italy’s 2006 World Cup triumph, Gilardino enjoyed one of the best spells of his playing career in Parma colours between 2002 and 2005, scoring 56 goals in 116 appearances. Since retiring, he has built a solid coaching résumé with Rezzato, Pro Vercelli, Genoa and Pisa. His arrival marks a symbolic and strategic reset for the club, which hopes his experience and history in Emilia can guide the team forward after Cuesta’s departure.
