FC Köln have strengthened their defence with the signing of Ghanaian left‑back Gideon Mensah on a two‑year contract after his departure from Auxerre. The 27‑year‑old became a free agent on June 30 following four seasons in France, where he helped Auxerre earn promotion to Ligue 1 and remain competitive in the top flight. A consistent starter throughout his spell at the Stade Abbé‑Deschamps, Mensah leaves as one of the club’s most dependable performers.
He attracted interest from Schalke 04, Coventry City and several Turkish sides before choosing Köln, who were seeking a replacement for Kristoffer Lund after the Dane’s loan ended. Mensah now joins a select group as only the fifth Ghanaian to represent the club.
His arrival forms part of a broader rebuild under coach Lukas Kwasniok, who aims for a stronger Bundesliga campaign after finishing 14th last season. Mensah arrives fresh from an impressive World Cup, having played every minute for Ghana.
