Jesus sets clear terms for Ronaldo’s future with Portugal

Jorge Jesus used his official unveiling as Portugal’s new head coach to outline a firm but respectful stance on Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the national team. The 71‑year‑old, appointed to lead the Seleção through the 2030 World Cup, insisted the veteran forward “will never be a problem” and will continue to be called up only if he meets performance and physical‑condition standards.

Reflecting on their season together at Al‑Nassr, Jesus said working with Ronaldo was “very easy,” noting he substituted him 16 times without incident. He praised the 41‑year‑old’s fitness, recalling that Ronaldo consistently covered eight kilometres per match at high speed and avoided injuries throughout the campaign.

Jesus emphasised that Ronaldo remains a symbol of Portuguese football but stressed he will always prioritise the team’s needs. The new manager replaces Roberto Martínez and begins a cycle that will culminate in a home World Cup co‑hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
