Hugo Broos has confirmed he is leaving his role as South Africa coach after guiding the nation to its first World Cup knockout appearance in 16 years. Although he initially hinted he might reconsider retirement following the last‑32 defeat to co‑hosts Canada, speculation soon grew as the federation began accepting applications and even identified Pitso Mosimane as a leading candidate for a return.
Speaking to Belgian outlet voetbalnieuws.be, Broos said his decision is final, though he is open to helping the team in a consulting or scouting capacity. He revealed the federation’s chairman hopes to keep him involved and that he will return at the end of July to discuss a potential advisory role.
Broos leaves after five successful years, having qualified South Africa for consecutive Africa Cup of Nations finals and earning a bronze medal in 2023. Mosimane, who previously coached the national team twice, is considered the favourite to succeed him.
