Brazilian icon Romario has called for Carlo Ancelotti to be sacked without delay following the Selecao’s shock round‑of‑16 exit at the 2026 World Cup. Speaking on his Romario TV channel, the former striker, now a senator and still one of the most influential voices in Brazilian football, argued that the defeat to Norway proved the project is “finished,” despite Ancelotti recently signing an extension through 2030.
Romario placed heavy blame on the coach’s tactical decisions, criticising the substitution of Bruno Guimarães for Ederson and questioning the squad selection and lack of a clear identity. While acknowledging player responsibility, he insisted a reset must begin on the bench. He also suggested Ancelotti’s status as a foreigner has shielded him from harsher scrutiny, claiming a Brazilian coach would have been dismissed immediately.
Brazil’s early elimination, their first round‑of‑16 exit since 1990, has intensified pressure, though the CBF continues to publicly back Ancelotti as preparations for the 2030 cycle begin.
