Giovanni Malagò is set to relinquish the FIGC presidency but return immediately as special administrator under a compromise approved by the Italian Olympic Committee. CONI’s executive board voted unanimously to place the federation under extraordinary administration and proposed Malagò to oversee daily operations, pending confirmation from the National Council. The move provides a political solution after weeks of turmoil following Malagò’s June election, which he won with more than 68 percent of the vote. Legal reviews commissioned by CONI questioned the ballot’s validity because Malagò was not a FIGC member at the time, prompting the restructuring.
Under the plan, he will step down, guide the federation toward new elections within three months and regularise his status, allowing him to run again. The dispute comes at a delicate moment for Italian football, which faces structural challenges, including stadium upgrades for EURO 2032 and the sporting fallout from missing three consecutive World Cups.
