Paraguay extend Alfaro to 2030 after historic World Cup run

Paraguay have renewed Gustavo Alfaro’s contract through 2030, rewarding the 64‑year‑old for transforming the national team and guiding them to the World Cup last 16. Federation president Robert Harrison confirmed the extension on Friday, celebrating the agreement with a post on X. Alfaro took charge in mid‑2024 during a difficult qualifying spell, yet quickly stabilised the ‘Albirroja’, securing one of South America’s six automatic berths.

At the tournament, Paraguay produced one of the shocks of the competition by eliminating four‑time champions Germany on penalties in the round of 32, before narrowly falling 1‑0 to France. His initial deal expired after the World Cup, prompting Harrison to publicly urge him to stay for a “second half”. Alfaro had insisted on a long‑term, structured plan for Paraguayan football, and the new contract signals that those assurances were met. The extension cements his status as a hugely popular figure across the country.
