Williams ends Ghana chapter after four‑year international journey

Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football, ending a four‑year spell with Ghana after switching allegiance from Spain in 2022. The 32‑year‑old confirmed his decision on September 11, saying the moment had come to close a meaningful chapter that allowed him to reconnect with his heritage. Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, Williams represented Spain at youth level and made a single senior appearance in 2016 before choosing to play for the Black Stars.

He debuted against Brazil in September 2022 and went on to feature at both the 2022 and 2026 World Cups, as well as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Williams scored twice in World Cup qualifying and finished with twenty‑eight caps, contributing pace, versatility and experience across the frontline.

In a heartfelt message, he thanked supporters and said Ghana had given him “much more than football,” adding he would continue backing the Black Stars as a fan.
