Fofana retires from Ivory Coast duty after AFCON triumph

Seko Fofana has announced his retirement from the Ivory Coast national team, ending a nine‑year international career marked by 35 appearances and seven goals. The 31‑year‑old midfielder, currently on loan at FC Porto from Rennes, revealed his decision in an Instagram post, expressing pride and gratitude for representing the Elephants. He highlighted Ivory Coast’s 2023 AFCON title as the fulfilment of a childhood dream and thanked teammates, staff and supporters for their backing.

Born in Paris and a former French youth international, Fofana debuted for Ivory Coast in 2017 and featured at the 2026 World Cup. His message emphasised continued support for the national team, praising the talent of the new generation.

Fofana returned to Porto this season after a decisive loan spell last year, though he has yet to start a match in 2026/27. His international retirement allows him to focus fully on club duties while remaining an ardent fan of the Elephants.
