Pro Ref admits VAR mistake on Haaland’s derby winner

Refereeing organisation Pro Ref acknowledged a VAR error in Manchester City’s 1‑0 derby win at Old Trafford, admitting Erling Haaland’s winning goal should not have been allowed to stand. The striker’s hour‑mark finish was initially ruled out for offside before VAR overturned the decision, judging him onside.

However, Pro Ref later clarified that the officials failed to consider the influence of Enzo Fernández, who attempted to head the ball from an offside position. Although he did not touch it, his involvement made the situation subjective and should have prompted an on‑field review. The body contacted Manchester United to recognise what it called an “error of judgement” and confirmed the incident will be reviewed.

United manager Michael Carrick expressed disbelief, criticising the layers of technology and personnel that still produced the wrong outcome. The defeat added frustration to a contentious moment in a fiercely contested Manchester derby.
