With goals from Mateo Retegui and Caleb Ekuban in the last 20 minutes, Genoa defeated Lecce 2-1 on Sunday, extending their remarkable undefeated streak in Serie A to seven games. Lecce's Nikola Krstovic missed an early penalty, but the Montenegrin's cleverly deflected goal floated past Josep Martinez just before halftime to give Lecce the lead. With draws against title contenders Juventus and Inter, Genoa's undefeated run dating back to December gave them a chance to battle for a spot in Europe the following season.
A free kick struck the crossbar and Retegui headed in the rebound to tie the score. After Lecce failed to clear a goalmouth scramble, Retegui set up the winning goal six minutes later with an acrobatic header across goal from Ekuban. Lecce is now only four points above the relegation zone after the loss. While still in 11th place, Genoa is only six points off of fifth place.
