Koni De Winter has unexpectedly turned down a call-up to the Belgian national team, creating uncertainty over his international future. The 24-year-old defender has established himself as an important member of Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan side, but will miss Belgium’s upcoming Nations League fixtures.
Head coach Mark van Bommel confirmed that the decision came directly from the player following a personal conversation. "De Winter made his own decision. I spoke to him and explained the situation," the coach revealed, dismissing suggestions that limited playing time during the previous international break was responsible.
Van Bommel also made clear that the choice could have lasting repercussions. "We have to accept it, but there will be consequences in the long term. He is 24, so he is making this decision quite early," he warned.
Belgium face Italy on November 15, while De Winter’s international future remains uncertain.
